Historic buildings in landmarks districts are often under-built and hold potential for future developers or owners to enlarge their building without infringing upon the historic character of the district. However, this process if often complicated, delicate in nature, and frequently over looked due to the required attention to detail. Commissioned to design a penthouse addition the 299 sqft pop-up is part of a newly renovated duplex apartment with the private roof terrace that will crown the restored building originally design by architect Timothy Remsen in 1891.
The penthouse addition is a contemporary interpretation of the mansard roof often found in Romanesque Revival style buildings throughout historic Brooklyn neighborhoods. The rhythm of the penthouse is derived from bay width and location on the original facade while the dark bronze and heavy earth tones of the penthouse material palette were chosen to complement the surrounding neighborhood context.
