offered up a chance to explore the ever-changing fabric and context of Brooklyn's neighborhoods during a period of rapid growth for the outer borough. Conceived as two volumes the proposal for a new 8-story mixed-use building in one of Brooklyn's old manufacturing districts. A five-story base which respects the surrounding brownstones and existing aesthetics of the street, a gap, and then a two-story volume above that provides sweeping views across the borough and towards the New York skyline. The gap serves as a break in scale and structure to separate itself from the base and existing street wall so that the building is more responsive to its neighbors. This also provides a more 'solid' ground for which the lighter, more sculpted top volume rests on. .
