with a two-story addition added to an existing four-story townhouse, a full redesign and gut renovation was undertaken for a family of five. To contrast the minimalist perspective of the clients the decision was made to expose the structure, HVAC system, sprinklers and new steel stair through the center of the house. In doing so, the two languages exist in juxtaposition to each other to create a detailed, modern, home full of character. The open floor plan on all levels is connected vertically through the steel center stringer stair and screen clad with reclaimed, 200-year-old, white oak taken from a bar just outside of Pennsylvania. This accent piece is articulated with custom lighting on an exposed brick wall that extends throughout the stairwell.
