Art galleries are void spaces that prioritize lighting to enhance the users experience while not detracting or damaging the art being presented. In some cases, art galleries also function as workspaces, or community gathering areas, but very rarely do we get the chance as designers to combine all three programmatic types at the request of the client.
Warehouse 623 is the exploration, intersection, and renovation of the space to serve as a cafe, art gallery, work-share, and community gathering space. The combination of these programmatic needs is done through a single interjecting folded element that negotiates all program components and effortlessly encloses the area while the facade suggests the current use format inside. The exterior facade of perforated metal is operable in the Z-axis, and either exists in the open state providing privacy for the floor above while welcoming people at the ground level or in the closed status drawing attention to what exists behind the screen and highlighting the event space above and within Warehouse 623.
